To start a mobile money business in Uganda, apply with a major network like MTN or Airtel, providing a valid national ID, business documents (like a trading license or certificate of incorporation), and initial capital for float.
You'll need a business premises, a company or business name registration from the Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB), and a cash-in/cash-out float to start. You can also rent a registered mobile money line from an existing agent to begin faster.
1). Choose a Mobile Network Operator.
MTN Uganda:
Visit an MTN service center with your national ID, business license, certificate of incorporation, and sufficient capital to buy float.
Airtel Uganda:
Go to an Airtel Money branch with your national ID, trading license, and TIN certificate.
A representative will visit your business premises to issue you an Airtel Money line.
2). Register your Business.
- You can register your business as a company or a business name at the Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB).
- A company receives a certificate of incorporation, while a business name registration provides a certificate confirming the registration.
3). Fulfill Agent Requirements.
- National ID: A valid identity card is required for the application.
- Business Documents: Provide your valid trading license, certificate of incorporation, or a business permit.
- Initial Capital: You will need capital to purchase an initial float (cash) for daily transactions.
- Local Council (LC) Letter: You may need a letter of introduction or recommendation from your Local Council.
4). Secure a Mobile Money Line.
- Direct Application: Apply directly with the network operator at their service center.
- Rent a Line: You can rent a mobile money line from an existing agent or through a master agent or aggregator. This is a quicker way to start, but you will pay a monthly rental fee.
5). Prepare Your Business Premises and Float.
- Premises: You need a physical business location where you will serve customers.
- Float: You must have starting capital (float) to service cash-in and cash-out transactions for your customers.
6). Begin Operations.
- Once approved and equipped, you can start providing mobile money services, including customer registration and facilitating transactions.
- Your income will be earned through commissions on each transaction.
